WOMEN'S SOCCER EARNS FIRST WIN OF THE SEASON

In commanding fashion, the Pumas secured their first win of the 2024 season, defeating Gateway Community College 6-0 on Tuesday. This victory marked not only the team's first of the season, but also Head Coach Guillermo Uriarte's first collegiate win as a head coach.

The Pumas dominated from the start, with forward Mia Acuña converting a penalty kick just five minutes into the game. Acuña completed a hat-trick by halftime, scoring again in the 11th and 42nd minutes. Additional goals came from Sarah Barsalou in the 23rd minute, Onora Farney in the 66th minute, and Kaidence Fernandez, who sealed the scoreline in the 86th minute.

The Pumas' relentless attack produced 31 shots, 21 of which were on goal, while the defense held strong, limiting GWCC to just nine shots with five on target. Goalkeepers Sydney King and Magdalena Eastwood combined for the clean sheet, with King earning the win.

Coach Uriarte praised his team's performance, "The effort from every player was incredible today. They showed a lot of heart and determination, and this win reflects their hard work."

Adding a special moment to the occasion, Coach Uriarte was presented with a team signed game ball to commemorate his first collegiate victory.

The Pumas will look to carry this momentum into their next match on Saturday, September 21, when they host Mesa Community College at 2:00pm.
