PUMAS FINISH THIRD & SEVENTH AT DREWS/NEUBAUER

The Puma Cross Country teams competed October 19 at the Jim Drews/Tori Neubauer Cross Country Invitational in West Salem, WI. Both teams ran exceptionally well with the women finishing 3rd (125 points) and the men finishing 7th (238 points). "We enjoy coming back here and mixing it up with the four-year schools," said coach David Barney, "I'm proud of our kids because they're not afraid to go out and race with these universities." Host Wisconsin-La Crosse won both the women's and men's team titles in the twenty-team race.

The women were led by Keira Damron who placed eighth overall in the 6000m race with a time of 22:49.1. Damron was followed by: Laynee Hollech, 18th (23:11.5); Olivia Coulston, 20th (23:15.9); Rachael Bethancourt, 47th (24:05.0); Mackenzie Bethancourt, 62nd (24:17.3); McKenna Martin, 110th (25:35.3); Shantelle Berrien, 121st (25:49.6); and Brooke Redman, 210th (29:32.8). Gwen Hinz of Wisconsin- La Crosse ran 22:07.6 to finish first in the field of 237 women. "I'm excited for our women," stated Barney, "All four of our sophomores ran much faster than we ran here last year, and our freshmen ran great in their first 6k."

The top finisher for the men's team was Jackson Bland. Bland finished 14th overall and covered the hilly 8000m course in a time of 25:33.0. Following Bland were: Jaxon Zimmerman, 34th (26:14.33); Jacob Soukup, 45th (26:43.0); Nick Hiser, 108th (27:48.6); Joel Bejarano, 152nd (28:42.5); Anthony Padilla, 165th (28:56.2); and Ryan Ulmer, 217th (30:57.7). Mohammed Bati, representing Augsburg University, bettered the field of 279 runners to win the individual title with a time of 24:06.0. "A few of our men got out a little fast, and we suffered for it down the stretch," commented Barney, "The guys that went out a bit more conservative, fared a bit better. Overall, I'm happy with what we did. We had a good performance, and we learned a lot!"
