CROWDER FINISHES IN TOP 10 AT PUMA INVITE

The Pumas had two studnet-athletes competing in the Puma Invitational at Cave Creek Golf Course this week.

Taylor Crowder was in fifth place after the first round, and Janell Meza was trending in the right direction with her progress.

Crowder shot 79 on the first day.  On the second day, she shot an 88 to place her in the top ten of the event. The individuals medal was won by Pima golfer, Maria Harrouch, shooting a +6 for the tournament.  Mesa Community College took home the team trophy.

Coach Palmer said, "Taylor played very well on Monday.  Her second round, even though disappointing for her, was still good enough for her to be in the top ten.  The course is a very difficult course.  Her first day proves that she has the skill level to compete with the top players.  Day two revealed that golf is more than just physical.  The mental aspect of golf has to be strong.  Golf requires focus and a high level of concentration.  Any type of distraction, whether it's personal, school, work, or life in general, can really take anyone off of their game.  That's where the elite athletes in any sport excel.  Learning and being able to have that level of concentration to block out all other thoughts and emotions that may disrupt you, is an skill that one must practice."

Janell Meza improved her score by four strokes for round two of the tournament.   Coach Palmer stated, "For only having played a few months, Janell is really picking up the game quickly.  Her short game and putting has improved tremendously.  She works hard and is a quick learner, so I have no doubt that she will be able to drop her scores next fall."

The Pumas travel to Chandler-Gilbert Community College March 25-26 for their next tournament.
