ROJAS LAUNCHES THREE HOME RUNS, PUMAS BATTLE PHOENIX COLLEGE IN EXTRA INNINGS

Puma Softball (4-18) took the defending NJCAA National Champions Phoenix College Bears into extra innings in both games on Thursday, but ultimately were unable to come away with a win.

The Pumas bats were on fire all day as the Pumas hit five long balls. Estevannie Rojas launched three homers on the day and drove in eight runs for the Pumas.

Game 1: PVCC 7, PC 9 (8)

Despite a five-run deficit in the eighth inning, the Pumas almost came all the way back, eventually falling 9-7 to Phoenix College in extra innings in game one of the doubleheader. 

The Pumas got things moving in the first inning when Briana Govea homered on a 1-0 count, scoring three runs.  PC put up one in the second to make it 3-1. PV countered in the third with one, extending their lead to 4-1  The Bears evened things up at four in the top of the fourth inning when they launched a three-run home run. In extra innings, PC posted another five in the top of the eighth, taking the lead 9-4  The Pumas mounted an unsuccesssful comeback with three runs on a home run in the eighth inning.

Dawn Morris was in the circle for the Pumas. The pitcher allowed 12 hits and eight runs over eight innings, striking out three and walking one.

The Pumas launched two home runs on the day. Govea went yard in the first inning and Estevannie Rojas had a four bagger in the eighth.

Maegan Viramontes went 2-3 at the plate to lead the Pumas in hits. Defensively, the Pumas didn't commit a single error in the field. Taniyah LaDrique had five chances in the field, the most for the squad.

Game 2: PVCC 7, PC 11 (9)

The Pumas stayed in it until the end, but Phoenix College pulled away late in an 11-7 victory in game two of Thursday's double header.

With PC ahead 6-4, the Pumas tallied three runs in the fifth inning to take the lead 7-6. Rojas had a three run home run to give the Pumas the lead in the inning.  PC tied it up at 7-7 in the seventh.  With PC batting in the top of the ninth, the Bears hit a grand slam to give them an 11-7 lead, and ultimately the victory.
 
Estevannie Rojas drove in five runners in the loss. Rojas drove in runs on a home run in the fourth and a home run in the fifth. Her second and third on the day.  The Pumas socked three home runs on the day. Rojas had two and Emily Viramontes had a four bagger in the first.  The Pumas racked up 10 hits in the game. Rojas, Briana Govea, and Maegan Viramontes each collected two hits to lead the team.
 
Holly Myers led things off on the rubber for the Pumas. Myers lasted eight innings, allowing 11 hits and nine runs while striking out two. Angelique Aguayo threw one inning in relief.
