PUMA SOFTBALL OPENS 2023 SEASON

Puma Softball (1-1) started their 2023 season with a split against Glendale on Tuesday.

Game 1: GCC 8, PVCC 6 (8)

The Pumas fought back after falling down by five runs in the seventh inning. The comeback fell just short though, in an 8-6 extra inning defeat to GCC.

The Pumas got down early to the Gauchos, when a double scored one run. After Glendale scored their third run of the game in the top of the fourth, the Pumas answered with one of their own when Emily Viramontes doubled on a 2-1 count, scoring one run.

Down 6-1 in the bottom of the seventh inning, Pumas added five runs to tie things up at six. The offensive surge was on a single by Briana Govea, a double by Kat Smith, a single by Maegan Viramontes, and a double by Emily Viramontes. The Pumas were right in it until the Guachos doubled in the eighth inning, taking an 8-6 lead.

Dawn Morris toed the rubber for the Pumas. The lefthander went five innings, allowing five runs on seven hits and striking out two. Jazlyn Romero threw three innings in relief.

The Pumas racked up 10 hits in the game. Estevannie Rojas, Emily Viramontes, and Maegan Viramontes led the team with two hits each.

Game 2: PVCC 11, GCC 6

The Pumas stole the lead late in the game in an 11-6 victory over GCC in game 2 of the day.

The Pumas captured the lead in the first inning when Govea hit her first collegiate homerun and drove in two.  After the Gauchos took the lead in the third, the Pumas tied things up at six when Holly Myers singled on the first pitch of the at bat, scoring one run.  The game was tied at six with the Pumas batting in the bottom of the fifth when Briana Govea singled on a 2-2 count, scoring one run.

Myers was on the rubber for the Pumas. The pitcher surrendered six runs on nine hits over five and two-thirds innings.

The Pumas collected 16 hits while GCC endale had nine in the high-scoring affair. The Pumas were led by Rojas who went 3-4 at the plate.
