PUMA SOFTBALL SWEEPS ARIZONA WESTERN

In the midst of a rough season, Puma Softball had a bright spot when they swept Arizona Western on April 12. This was the Pumas first sweep of the season and the first time they have swept a DI school since they swept Central Arizona and AWC in 2018.

Game 1: PVCC 15, AWC 6 (5)

In game one of the double-header, Jazlyn Romero was clutch at the plate with ducks on the pond, driving in six on three hits to lead the Pumas past AWC 15-6. Romero drove in runs on a homerun in the second, a double in the third, and a homerun in the fourth.

AWC scored five runs in the third inning, but the Pumas still managed to pull out the victory.  The Pumas got on the board in the first inning when they scored on a stolen base during Eviana Varela's's at bat. Then Varela singled, driving in one.  The Pumas notched five runs in the fourth inning. The big inning was thanks to homeruns by Monika Rodriguez and Romero and a double by Emily Viramontes.

Dawn Morris got the start for the Pumas. The lefthander lasted five innings, allowing eight hits and six runs while striking out two.

The Pumas smacked three homeruns on the day. Rodriguez had a long ball in the fourth inning and Romer had a four bagger in the second and fourth innings.

The Pumas collected 13 hits. Romero, Maegan Viramontes, and Kat Smith all managed multiple hits for the team with Viramontes and Romero each collecting three hits. The Pumas didn't commit a single error in the field.

 

Game 2: PVCC 11, AWC 10

In game two of the double-header, the Pumas took the lead late in the game in an 11-10 victory over Arizona Western. The game was tied at six with the Pumas batting in the bottom of the fifth when Victoria Castano tripled on a 2-1 count, scoring one run.

The Pumas took an early lead in the second inning when Kat Smith singled on a 2-0 count, scoring one run. The Pumas put up three runs more in the third inning. The big bats were led by Jazlyn Romero and Savannah Drozda, who each had RBIs in the inning.

Romero took the win for the Pumas. The righthander lasted seven innings, allowing 15 hits and eight runs while striking out one.

The Pumas smacked two homeruns on the day. Romero went deep in the third inning and Drozda had a long ball in the third inning.

The Pumas totaled 14 hits. Castano, Emily Viramontes, Andi Elliot, Romero, and Drozda each racked up multiple hits for the Pumas. Castano went 3-for-4 at the plate to lead the team in hits.
