PUMA SOFTBALL GETS FIRST WIN OF THE SEASON AGAINST ARIZONA WESTERN

After a rough start to the season, Puma Softball came away with their first victory of the season in game two of the double header against Arizona Western on Saturday, February 26. Leading up to the win, the Pumas came up just short in three close games against Scottsdale and in the first game against the Matadors.

Tuesday, February 22

Game 1: SCC 5, PVCC 2

Jazlyn Romero was on the rubber for the Pumas in game one of the double header against Scottsdale. The righthander lasted seven innings, allowing ten hits and five runs while striking out one.

The Pumas tallied one home run on the day when Eviana Varela had a four-bagger in the seventh inning.

Maegan Viramontes led the Pumas with two hits in three at bats.

Game 2: SCC 12, PVCC 10

The Pumas fought back after falling down by seven runs in the second inning. The comeback fell just short though, in a 12-10 defeat to the Artichoke in game two of the double header. The Pumas put up 10 runs in the failed comeback. Monika Rodriguez, Emily Viramontes, Victoria Castano, Jazlyn Romero, Jessica Gordon, and Savannah Drozda powered the rally with RBIs. The Pumas were right in it until the Artichokes doubled in the fifth inning to take the lead for good. 

After being down 7-0, the Pumas scored six runs in the second inning. The Pumas put the pressure on, led by singles from Rodriguez, Viramontes, and Castano and a double by Romero.

Dawn Morris was in the circle for the Pumas. Morris surrendered 12 runs on 20 hits over seven innings, striking out seven. 

The Pumas had 10 hits in the game. Viramontes and Morris both collected two hits to lead the Pumas. 

 

Saturday, February 26

Game 1: AWC 5, PVCC 2

The Pumas fell short to Arizona Western 5-2 in game one of the double header in Yuma.   

The Pumas got on the board in the first inning when Mikaela Salkauskas singled, bringing in one run.  The Matadors pulled away for good however with three runs in the third inning. 

Jazlyn Romero was in the pitcher's circle for the Pumas. Romero lasted six innings, allowing nine hits and five runs while striking out one.

The Pumas collected seven hits in the game led by Savannah Drozda and Eviana Varela who each collected two hits.  

Game 2: AWC 4, PVCC 8

The Pumas took home an 8-4 victory over Arizona Western in game two of the double header, their first victory of the season.

The Pumas got on the board in the second inning.  With Emily Viramontes up to bat and bases loaded, she doubled on the first pitch of the at bat, scoring three runs.  The Pumas then notched three runs in the sixth inning. The offensive onslaught came from a single by Mikaela Salkauskas, a groundout by Viramontes, and a double by Savannah Drozda.

Dawn Morris earned the win for the Pumas. The lefthander surrendered four runs on 12 hits over seven innings, striking out five.

The Pumas hit one home run on the day when Salkauskas hit a dinger in the fifth inning.

The Pumas collected 11 hits in the game. Drozda, Salkauskas, Jessica Gordon, Viramontes, and Kat Smith each had multiple hits for the Pumas. Drozda went 3-for-4 at the plate to lead the team in hits.

Defensively, the Pumas didn't commit a single error in the field. Briana Govea had seven chances in the field, the most on the team.
