PUMA SOFTBALL PLAYS ITALIAN NATIONAL TEAM

The Pumas faced off against the Italian National Team on Saturday, February 19. Although the Italian's took both games of the double header, it was a great day of Softball as well as a family affair. Puma Head Coach Nick Candrea faced off against his brother, former University of Arizona and Team USA Gold Medal who is a Special Advisor with Team Italy.

Game 1: Italian National Team 9, PVCC 1

The Pumas watched the game slip away early and couldn't recover in a 9-1 loss to Italy in game one of the double header. Italy scored three runs in the first inning on a double and a single.

The Pumas struggled to put runs on the board and had a tough time defensively containing Italy, giving up nine runs.

Jazlyn Romero toed the rubber for the Pumas. The pitcher went five innings, allowing nine runs on 12 hits and striking out two.
 
The Pumas socked one home run on the day when Mikaela Salkauskas hit a homer in the fourth inning.  Maegan Viramontes led the Pumas with two hits in three at bats.
 
Game 2: Italian National Team 11, PVCC 2

The Pumas had trouble keeping up with Italy in an 11-2 loss in the second game of the double header.

The Pumas got things moving in the first inning, when Mikaela Salkauskas singled on a 0-1 count, scoring one run. Italy evened things up at two in the top of the second inning with a two-run scoring double.
 
The Italian's pulled away for good with three runs in the third inning.
 
Dawn Morris led things off in the circle for the Pumas. The southpaw went five innings, allowing 11 runs on 14 hits, striking out three and walking zero. 
 
Savannah Drozda led the Pumas offensively with two hits in two at bats.
