PUMAS NOTCH BIG WINS AT ACCAC CHAMPIONSHIP

PUMAS NOTCH BIG WINS AT ACCAC CHAMPIONSHIP

Puma Track & Field showed that size doesn't always matter as they competed at the ACCAC Championship at Glendale Community College.  The Pumas' teams, small in quantity, continued to show their quality, winning nine of the 38 events contested at the six-team championship meet.

In the first running event of the day, Jason Lundgren and Caleb Villegas competed in the steeplechase. After patiently waiting for four laps, Lundgren made his move into the lead and never looked back. His time of 9:41.22 improved his NJCAA national qualifying mark by almost 10 seconds. Villegas' time of 10:13.84 placed him third and left him just short of All-ACCAC honors while improving his personal best time by 36 seconds.

The Pumas struck gold again in the middle-distance races, where Jazmin Estrada and Gilbert Olivas claimed wins. Both of them claimed victory in the 1500m run and then came back to triumph in the 800m. All four races were tactical, with Estrada and Olivas sitting behind the leaders until the last lap where they made big moves to take the win. Chaz Miller added to the Pumas' dominance with a fourth-place finish in the men's 1500m, running a personal best of 3:56.15.

In the last distance event of the night, Nate Pestka claimed victory in the 5000m run. His win gave PV a clean sweep of all the distance events on the men's side and six wins out of eight for all distance events. Pestka's time of 15:15.57 qualified him for the NJCAA national championship by 0.07 seconds and was a personal best.

The Pumas' dominance didn't end with the distance races as the PV throwers also let the conference know they were present. Staying true to their modus operandi, the Puma throwers scored big.  They started out by dominating the hammer throw as Audrey Armstrong and Bryce Myers-Haeussler won their respective events with Karsten Deakin finishing second on the women's side. Armstrong threw the hammer 54.70m, falling just short of her school record by 0.10m. Myers-Haeussler threw a personal best of 57.08m to claim victory on the men's side.

Along with her performance in the hammer throw, Karsten earned first team All-ACCAC in the shot put and second team All-ACCAC in the discus.  Her three individual All-ACCAC performances were the most out of any student-athlete at the meet.

Erick Reyes also represented PV well in the 400m hurdles. He ran a personal best 54.58 to earn him second team All-ACCAC honors.
