PUMA SOCCER OPENS SEASON

PUMA SOCCER OPENS SEASON
The Puma Men's Soccer team started the COVID delayed 2020 season last week against two powerhouse programs.  On April 8, the Pumas traveled to take the NJCAA 10th ranked Phoenix College Bears. The Pumas struck first in the early minutes of the game when Luis Angulo took a pass from Enrique Arellano on top of the box and hit the upper 90 with a great shot.  The Puma defense held strong until the final 13 minutes of the game when PC was able to mount a couple of attacks that resulted in two goals for the Bears.    Luis Villegas completed the game with 10 saves on 12 shots in the loss.

On Saturday, PVCC was home for a match against the number one ranked team in the country, the Pima Aztecs.  Pima picked up two quick goals right after the first water break to take a 2-0 lead into half-time.  Robert Delci responded with a strike 25 yards out to make the score 2-1.  Pima capitalized on a Puma mistake to make it 3-1 in the 73rd minute.  The Pumas would not back off even though they were down late in the game.  PVCC had several chances in the waning minutes of the game, which resulted in Kristian Bielicki's goal, making the final result 3-2 in favor of Pima.

"I was happy with our performance this week against two of the top teams in the country.  We proved that we could play against the best.  The team never gave up, and they are hungry for their first win," said head coach Christian DeVries.

The Pumas return to action on Thursday with a match at Scottsdale Community College.  Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30pm.
