The Puma Invite was a huge success on March 13-14th at Cave Creek Golf Course in Phoenix. The Pumas placed 5th out of eight teams with South Mountain CC taking home the trophy.
The course was in great shape and proved to be a challenge for the teams but on the second day, SMCC figured out the greens and shot an impressive 16 under par. That gave SMCC a team total of 12 under. Mesa placed 2nd shooting even par.
For the Pumas, Beau Autery (+4) and Owen Slusher (+6 ) led the team to place them in 5th place. Slusher was the only Puma to shoot under par (-1) on the second day of the tournament.
Coach Palmer stated, “It was very disappointing to shoot so poorly on our home course. We can learn a lot from our wins and losses. And in this tournament we learned that our mental game and mindset were our weakness. Sometimes you can play a course and it exposes your ball striking was off, or putting was off. But clearly this performance exposed that our mental game was off. I would have loved to have won or played better, but like I said, we will learn from this.”
