The Pumas returned to the win column on Tuesday, defeating Gateway Community College 3-0 with a decisive second-half performance. After a slow start, the Pumas showcased resilience and determination to secure their third win of the season in conference play, bringing their record to 3-2-2.
Despite a scoreless first half, the Pumas took control after halftime, with Jordan Culver breaking the deadlock in the 58th minute. Culver's unassisted goal ignited the Pumas' offense. Midfielder Benjamin Orozco doubled the lead in the 69th minute, assisted by forward Gavin Sanchez. Sanchez sealed the victory with a goal of his own in the 85th minute, set up by Nico White.
Throughout the match, the Puma defense remained solid, led by goalkeeper Preston Parsons, who recorded five saves to earn a well-deserved shutout. The Pumas dominated offensive play, outshooting Gateway 28-8 and forcing their goalkeeper, Julian Moreno, to make 15 saves.
Head coach Christian DeVries praised the team's perseverance, "We started slow, but our never-quit attitude got the result at the end of the day."
The Pumas will look to build on this victory when they return to action at home on Saturday, September 21, when they face Mesa Community College at 12pm.
