
The Pumas lost to Pima Community College 9-5 in game one of the NJCAA Region I Division II semifinals on Thursday.
The Pumas were the first to get on the board in the first when Alex Sanchez grounded out, scoring one run. A single by Tyler Vanmeter extended their lead to 2-0 in the top of the second inning and the Pumas added one run in the third after Sanchez grounded into a double play.
The Aztects tied the game 5-5 in the bottom of the sixth thanks to a double and a single, and they took the lead for good in the bottom of the seventh with a two run home run.
Owen Harper opened the game for the Pumas. The southpaw gave up eight hits and five runs (two earned) over five and two-thirds innings, striking out three and walking three.
The Pumas tallied nine hits in the game. Jared Swarbrick, Erick Dessens, and Andrew Armas each collected two hits for the team with Dessens, Vanmeter, and Sanchez each driving in one run. Defensively, the Pumas umas turned two double plays in the game.
Game two of the series will be played on Friday, May 2 at Pima Community College, first pitch is at 2:00pm
