PUMAS' STRUGGLES CONTINUE

The Pumas' 2021 season struggles continued over the last two weeks of conference play.  Below is a recap of the last eight games.

Saturday, March 27 vs. Pima Community College

Game 1: Pima 10, PVCC 1

Early Lead For Pima Seals Fate for Pumas

The Pumas fell behind early and could not come back in a 10-1 loss to Pima. The Pumas struggled to contain the high-powered offense of the Aztecs, giving up 10 runs.

Pima got the scoring going on a double in the first and a groundout in the second inning. They then piled on four more runs in the fourth inning.

Jonathan Hyman toed the rubber for the Pumas. The righty surrendered nine runs on eight hits over four innings. CJ Molina threw three innings in relief.

Larry Ross, Noah Burgarello, Tyler McCaughey, Cade Kennedy, and Jager Straub all had one hit for the Pumas. The Pumas were sure-handed in the field and did not commit a single error. Straub had the most chances in the field with nine.

Game 2: Pima 15, PVCC 1

Pima Runs Away with Early Lead in Victory

The Pumas fell behind early and couldn't come back in a 15-1 loss to Pima.

The Pumas struggled to contain the high-powered offense of the Aztecs, giving up 15 runs.

Brock Arnold led things off on the hill for the Pumas. The southpaw surrendered 11 runs on 12 hits over four and one-third innings, striking out one and walking one. Danny Carpenter and Logan Birch entered the game as relief, throwing one and two-thirds innings and one inning respectively.

Derek Wood went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead the Pumas in hits.

 

Tuesday, March 30, 2021 vs. Yavapai College

Game 1: YC 5, PVCC 4

Late Score Costs Paradise Valley Against Yavapai

The Pumas lost the lead late in a 5-4 defeat to Yavapai. The game was tied at four with the Roughriders batting in the bottom of the sixth when Yavapai singled on a 1-0 count, scoring one run.

The Pumas evened things up at four in the top of the fifth inning when Jager Straub's sac fly scored one run for the Pumas.  The Pumas put up three runs in the fifth inning. The sac fly by Straub and a double by Ryan Romero led the rally for the Pumas.
 
The Pumas lost despite out-hitting Yavapai eight to seven. 

Colton McIntosh started the game for the Pumas. McIntosh surrendered four runs on four hits over three and a third innings, striking out two.  Danny Carpenter took the loss for the Pumas. The pitcher lasted two and two-thirds innings, allowing three hits and one run while striking out two. 

The Pumas collected eight hits on the day led by Austin Pickowicz and Romero who each had two.

Game 2: YC 14, PVCC 9

Another Late Score Costs the Pumas Against Yavapai

The Pumas stayed in this one until the end, but Yavapai pulled away late in a 14-9 victory. Yavapai trailed 8-5 in the bottom of the sixth inning when the Roughriders homered on a 2-1 count, scoring four runs.

Isaac George went 3-for-5 at the plate to lead the Pumas in hits. George drove in five runners in the loss. George drove in runs on a single in the second, a single in the fourth, a groundout in the sixth, and a groundout in the eighth.

The Pumas got things started in the first inning when Tyler McCaughey grounded out, scoring one run. The Pumas put up four runs in the second inning. Austin Pickowicz, Brayden Graham and George all moved runners across the plate with RBIs in the inning.

David Enriquez started the game for the Pumas. Enriquez lasted five innings, allowing five hits and five runs while striking out 10. Logan Birch, Zach Rogers, and Michael Modrick each contributed in relief for the Pumas.

 

Saturday, April 3, 2021 vs. Arizona Western College

Game 1: AWC 11, PVCC 1

Pumas Can't Catch Up to Arizona Western

The Pumas fell behind early and couldn't come back in an 11-1 loss to Arizona Western in game one of the day's doubleheader. AWC took the lead on a single in the second inning.

The Pumas struggled to contain the high-powered offense of Arizona Western, giving up 11 runs.

Zach Rogers was on the mound for the Pumas. The righthander went four innings, allowing six runs on two hits and striking out three. Michael Modrick and CJ Molina entered the game in relief, throwing two innings and one inning respectively.

The Pumas tallied seven hits on the day. Isaac George and Derek Wood each collected two hits to lead the Pumas.

Game 2: AWC 3, PVCC 1

Pumas Drop Game to Arizona Western After Late Score

The Pumas lost the lead late in a 3-1 defeat to Arizona Western in the day's finale. The game was tied at one with Arizona Western batting in the top of the seventh when the Matadors singled on a 1-2 count, scoring one run.

The pitching was strong on both sides. AWC's pitchers struck out 14, while the Pumas sat down 16.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Pumas tied things up at one when Brayden Graham singled on a 1-1 count, scoring one run.

Jonathan Hyman started the game for the Pumas. The righty lasted three innings, allowing six hits and one run while striking out six and walking one. Brady Welch and Danny Carpenter entered the game in relief, throwing three innings each.

Austin Woodhouse, Jace Caito-DeRosier and Graham each collected one hit for the Pumas..

 

Tuesday, April 6, 2021 vs. Scottsdale Community College

Game 1: SCC 2, PVCC 0

Pumas Fall to the Artichokes in Low-Scoring Affair

Both teams were strong on the hill on Tuesday, but Scottsdale was just a little bit stronger at the plate in a victory over the Pumas in game one on Tuesday. 

One bright spot for the Pumas was a single by Austin Woodhouse in the third inning.

David Enriquez started the game for the Pumas and recorded 18 outs.  The righthander allowed four hits and two runs over six innings, striking out nine.

Woodhouse, Isaac George, and Jager Straub each collected one hit.

Game 2: SCC 18, PVCC 4

Scottsdale Captures Lead Early to Defeat Paradise Valley

The Pumas fell behind early and couldn't come back in an 18-4 loss to Scottsdale on Tuesday. The Artichokes took the lead on a home run in the second inning.

The Pumas struggled to contain the high-powered offense of Scottsdale, giving up 18 runs.

Danny Carpenter toed the rubber for the Pumas. The pitcher went two innings, allowing four runs on three hits and striking out three. Brady Welch, Michael Modrick, and Tanner Isaacs each contributed in relief.

The Pumas tallied one home run on the day, when Anthoine Shell hit a long ball in the fourth inning.

Noah Burgarello, Isaac George, Tyler McCaughey, Cade Kennedy, Shell, and Jager Straub each collected one hit for the Pumas.
